Preventing Workplace Ailments to Keep Employee Productivity High

Cold and flu season is upon us. Helping your employees stay well is good for business—it lets your company maintain necessary staffing levels and high productivity. This season, you can take a few steps to keep wellness in your workplace. It’s easy by following a few simple steps.

How to help your employees stay healthy this winter

Here’s what you can do to encourage good health amongst your staff:

Cover flu shots.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend flu shots as the single best way to prevent the flu. You can encourage your employees to get their flu shots by making it as easy as possible for them: hold a “flu shot clinic” at your workplace and offer flu shots for free. Advertise the date—hang posters throughout your office, pass out flyers or post it on the company intranet so your staff won’t forget. For those that can’t make it to the clinic, offer vouchers so they can get a flu shot for free at a local clinic or pharmacy.

Spread the word.

Make posters that stress the importance of hand washing for cold and flu prevention. Hang them in the following places: the cafeteria, the deli, all coffee galleys, bathrooms and in any on-site workout areas.

Create “wellness stations.”

Throughout your building, create “wellness stations” where employees can get antibacterial wipes, or paper towels and antibacterial spray. Let your staff know they can use these items to keep their work stations clean and germ-free.

Keep the cleaning staff in the loop.

Recommend that your cleaning staff wipe down all areas that are common for germ transfer. These include door knobs, elevator buttons, desk phones, keyboards and handrails.

Encourage your staff to use their sick time.

When employees come to work sick, they increase their healing time while spreading germs to others. This is never a good situation. Let employees know that when they’re ill, the best thing they can do is stay home and get better.

Rely on your staffing partner.

Sometimes colds and flu can result in multiple employee absences, leaving your workforce short-handed. You can rely on your staffing partner for staff supplementation during extended employee absences.

By following a few simple steps, you can help your employees ward off colds and flu this winter. Your efforts will go a long way to help your company maintain efficiency and start off the new year with a bang.
