Should You Offer Holiday Bonuses to Temp Employees?

In a word: yes! Your temporary employees are just as much a part of your staff as your full-timers. But first things first: when considering holiday bonuses for your company, you must first decide to offer them at all. You will have several considerations before you reach your decision, and these are included below. If you do decide to offer bonuses during the holidays, by all means include your entire workforce, both temporary and full-time. This has several benefits to your company.

Choosing to offer a holiday bonus: What to consider

To offer or not to offer a holiday bonus? When reaching your final decision, think about the following:

  • Is it in the budget? True, as an employer you may feel like grumpy Scrooge versus newly energized Scrooge when making the decision to offer a holiday bonus. But is it truly in the budget this year? Just because you offered a bonus last year does not mean you must follow suit this year, and vice versa.
  • What about non-cash bonuses? Though cash is “king,” you can also provide other perks to employees to celebrate their hard work. Additional days off, extra dress-down days, or even small gift cards or gift baskets can be much appreciated if the budget is tight this year.
  • What is the best way to be fair? Though all workers should receive a bonus if you decide to hand them out, be completely fair and unbiased with your distribution. If bonuses are based on performance, create a scale that doesn’t reward some too much while others far too little. Also, make sure that all employees receive their bonuses at the same time; for example, as an addition to their paychecks.

Benefits of offering a holiday bonus (or other holiday perk) to your temp workers

It’s important to celebrate the contributions of all your employees. Here’s why:

  • Nothing is quite as motivating as recognition from the boss for a job well done.

And when you motivate your temporary employees, it encourages them to continue to work hard for your company.

  • Rewarding your temporary employees adds to their happiness and job satisfaction. And happy employees are productive employees.
  • Positive energy. Treating all your employees fair and equally helps everyone to feel like a valued member of your team. Leaving certain employees out of the fun can create feelings of alienation and rob your workplace of positive energy.
  • A great company reputation. Employers who take good care of their workers help establish their companies as great places to work. These are the companies that can easily attract top-notch talent. And caring employers continue to maintain successful businesses for which highly talented people want to work.

If you’re able to, just do it

It may seem like a simple step to take, but if your company can afford to offer holiday bonuses (or other holiday perks as described above), do it—for all of your employees. Employers who offer extras to both temporary and full-time staff build workforces that are motivated and productive.
