How to Proceed When You Don’t Get a Call Back for a Second Interview

Congratulations on landing a job interview! That means you’re one step closer to being hired. However, if you thought your interview went well, but you haven’t been contacted by the hiring manager, you can take action to follow up. After all, you took the time to prepare for your interview. It’s only fair to let you know where you stand. Here’s what you can do.

Steps to take when you don’t hear back after an interview

You’re excited about the potential of a new job and have been waiting patiently to hear more. But your cell phone has been silent. Here’s what you can do to follow up with the hiring manager:

  • Reach out. Showing initiative can be a good thing: it proves you’re really interested in the job. Simply call or email your contact. If you don’t get through by phone, just leave a message. You can try again in a few days if you don’t get a response.
  • Don’t overdo it. Employers are very busy people. Yes, it can be helpful to you in your job search to know when it’s time to start looking for another interview. But you don’t want to be a pest and ruin your chances of future opportunities, if possible, with this company.
  • If you have any contacts at the company, reach out to them. They may have heard about the status of the position for which you’ve applied and if it’s been filled yet or not.
  • Reach out to a different contact. Perhaps you interviewed with a department head, but your contact is a member of human resources. If you can’t get an answer from your contact and feel your interview went well, you may have the green light to reach out to someone higher up. This is especially true if he or she provided a business card during your interview.
  • Know when to call it quits. What are your instincts telling you? In retrospect, did your interview not go as well as you may have initially thought? A lack of response could be an answer in itself.
  • Maintain a good attitude. Being gracious goes a long way. If you get an answer you don’t want to hear, simply say, “I’m sorry to hear that. Thank you for the opportunity.” and move on. You should never take a hiring decision personally. You may have simply not been the best fit for the job and that’s OK. You’ll be the best fit for a different job.

Try another job search method

Rather than going it all on your own, you can work with a staffing partner. Your recruiter will act as your job coach, helping you to perfect your resume and interview technique. He or she will not set you up with a job opportunity for which you’re not perfectly qualified. This will greatly increase your chances of post-interview follow-up—and an exciting new job!
