Setting Challenging (but Manageable) Business Goals for 2016

Companies can achieve great things by challenging themselves to do more than their competitors. However, when setting business goals to help your business grow and advance, it’s also important to make your goals realistic. To do this, you’ll need to consider the resources you have available and work within those parameters. And with 2016 fast approaching, now is the time to start thinking big and planning for your business goals in the New Year. Here’s what you can do to prepare.

How to Set Manageable Business Goals

You can be well on your way to a successful 2016 with the following steps:

Define Your Goals

It may sound easy, but in order to set steps to achieve your business goals, you’ll need to clearly define what they are. First, your goals should align with your company’s mission and vision. If they don’t, your goals may not be best for your company. Next, you can break long-term goals (from 3–5 years to accomplish), into a few short-term goals—you’ll be able to work towards these as stops along the journey to your long-term goal. And always remember, your goals should be clearly defined: specific and detailed. This way, it will be much easier to formulate steps to achieve them. For example, “Increase revenue” is vague but “Sell more of XYZ product or service” is more clear.

Look at Past Data for Reference

If you’re continuing goals you started last year or the year before, you can take a look at past metrics to help you determine what you’ll aim for in 2016. Depending on the nature of your goal, you might consider quantifiable items such as profits, losses, revenue, service metrics, caseload, number of new clients, number of terminated clients, etc. This way, you can make your goal measurable.

Assign Tasks

You’ll need to break your goal down into tasks and steps. From there, you can delegate assignments to individuals within your company. You’ll want to follow up with these employees on a regular basis to keep track of progress.

Set Deadlines

By keeping yourself and your team on a schedule, you can maintain progress toward your goals and chip away at them, quarter by quarter. By carefully tracking your goals and meeting deadlines, you’ll help your company to be much more successful. And you’ll avoid having to make a valiant push in the fourth quarter to pick up any slack.

Consider Supplementing Your Workforce

If you’ve outlined a project for 2016 that can be best accomplished with additional talent, consider hiring temporary workers. You can work with a recruiter to find highly qualified temps with the skills and experience you need as you work towards your business goals.
