Four Ways to Put on Your Best Smile… When the Day is Really Getting the Best of You

So, it turns out your day just hasn’t been going as planned. You woke up late, discovered you were out of coffee, hit every red light on the way to work, and arrived to an inbox busting at the seams. These or hundreds of other scenarios could have started to frame your day. But the saying “It’s just one of those days” doesn’t have to be true. You can take easy steps to switch from a not-so-great day into one of the best days ever! In fact, by looking on the bright side, you can help to reduce your stress and improve your overall happiness every day. Here’s how.

Four ways to have a sunnier outlook—despite how your day began

Life is beautiful. Just try these four tricks to help yourself realize it every single day:

  1. Adopt a different viewpoint. Yes, it may seem like your day has taken an unfortunate turn or two. But just take some time to imagine your life from someone else’s point of view. For example, no matter what your job, social situation or living situation, there is someone somewhere who would envy what you have. Aspects of your life might allow you to help others, have a flexible schedule or a wide open future, comfort or freedom, plenty of space or cozy surroundings, etc.
  2. Be grateful. As human beings, we often spend a lot of time thinking about what we don’t have rather than being thankful for what we do have. Yes, maybe your coffee spilled on your way into the office, but you have a car and a really cool coffee shop on your morning commute. You were late, but you’re fortunate enough to have people who rely on you and were awaiting your arrival. And all those emails in your inbox? Those equal job security.
  3. Then laugh some more. The simple act of laughter can help take some of the pressure off. It’s important to lighten up and blow off a little steam here and there. Just put everything into perspective: in a year from now, will whatever is upsetting you matter at all? If you’re feeling really stressed, take a quick break and watch something funny on YouTube or chat with a coworker who makes you smile. You’ll feel your mood lighten in no time.
  4. Get some sun. Just a few soft rays on your face can naturally help to calm you down. A short walk outside or simply looking out the window or opening the blinds can make a world of difference. Keep a picture of a tropical scene, sea shells or something that reminds you of the outdoors or the beach on your desk for gloomy, grey days.

Help yourself to be happier!

When you can find happiness in any situation, you must may notice you’re a calmer person overall. And this can only be helpful to you in your everyday life.
