Is Your Morning Routine and That Early Cup of Coffee Wrecking the Day’s Productivity?

Good morning—or rocky morning? It’s really up to you. How you spend your first few waking hours can set the tone for the rest of your day. Following a routine that helps you to be healthy, happy and motivated is the best way to jumpstart your day—every day! It’s important to figure out what works best for you since everyone is different, but many successful people begin their days with some of the same activities. Here are nine you might want to make into daily habits of your own.

Nine Ways to Jumpstart Your Morning

Picture it: the alarm goes off, the birds are singing… and you’re cheerful and singing right along with them! It might sound like something out of a black and white movie, but by trying any of the following, you can be well on your way to a great day:

Get up at the same time every day.

Your body and brain appreciate consistency. You can train yourself to be more alert and less groggy upon waking if you plan to get up and at ‘em at the same time every day. (This also means you’ll want to go to bed at the same time every night.)

Exercise.

You can get your blood pumping to your muscles and brain by getting a little exercise at the beginning of your day. You might try going for a walk or run, taking a class at your gym, or even doing some yoga.

Avoid social media.

This time sucker can cause you to lose valuable minutes at the beginning of your day, distract you, or even make you feel envious of the lives of others. Unless you monitor a social media page for your job, it’s not the most productive way to begin your morning.

Eat a healthy breakfast.

Fruit, low-fat dairy, lean protein and whole grains—any of these items will give you the nutrition you need to start your day right. You’ll be able to think more clearly and avoid craving high-calorie, high-fat foods later in the day by eating breakfast every morning.

Drink water—not coffee.

Sometimes when you feel groggy you may just be dehydrated. And the jolt from coffee can cause a subsequent slump by late morning or early afternoon—especially if your cup of Joe came complete with sugar. It can help to start your day with water, and save the coffee for a pick-me-up in the afternoon.

Write a to-do list first, check email second.

Launching into your inbox can be distracting and stressful. It can help to have an idea first of the tasks you’d like to tackle and make a plan for how you’ll get them done before you enter the electronic world of messages, inquiries, questions and demands.

Listen to music.

There’s really no better way to get into a good mood than by listening to music while you get ready or during your morning commute. The sounds of your favorite band can help to relieve stress and increase feel-good endorphins.

Do something you really enjoy.

This can include any of the above items or something else. If you have something to look forward to each morning, it will be easier to get out of bed and help you look forward to beginning a fresh, new day.

Stick to a routine.

The more closely you can stick to a routine, the easier and faster you’ll be able to begin your day.

So, what’ll it be?

You can get yourself started by trying one or more items on this list, and with practice, you’ll discover other activities that really get you moving in the morning.
