Three Signs Your Best Employee is Seeking a New Job

Good employees can be hard to find—and even harder to replace. So once you’ve gotten your team in place you’ll want to take steps to keep them. If an employee has decided to look for something else, you may have time to intervene, but you’ll have to act fast. You’ll want to look for three tell-tale signs. Here’s what you need to know.

Beware of these red flags an employee is trying to leave you

Consider The Following Indicators

Dressing Up

An employee will need to go on interviews in order to find a new job, and it’s likely these appointments will happen during the workday. If a worker has shown up late or is requesting to leave early and is more dressed up than usual, this could be a sign he or she has come from or is heading to an interview.

Using Up Personal Time

An employee who is looking around for something else may request more time off for several reasons. First, it may be to attend an interview. You’ll be able to tell if that’s the case when a time off request is for an odd time of the day or week, for example, leaving early on a Tuesday or taking a few hours of PTO in the middle of the week. An employee planning to exit may also request more time off simply because he or she is unhappy and doesn’t want to be in the office. Also, it could be that the employee knows his or her time with you is limited and wants to use up any outstanding vacation days they aren’t forfeited.

Doing the Bare Minimum

Once they’ve made their mind up, an employee who’s looking for a new job may want to focus their efforts on new employment, rather than expending energy at your company. If you notice a worker showing up late, leaving right on time, acting bored or listless in meetings and no longer offering thoughts or ideas, it can be an indication he or she is focusing on something else.

Assess the Situation

If you notice any of the above signs and the employee is a good one, you’ll want to reach out and see what’s wrong. Maybe he or she needs room to grow, has an issue with a difficult co-worker or has something else you can help him or her work through—to stay with your company.

What to Do if You Need to Make a Replacement

Replacing a worker can be time-consuming and difficult, especially if the person was top notch—but you can make it easier on yourself by partnering with a recruiter. An experienced recruiter will work with you to understand your staffing needs, and will be able to place you with active or passive candidates matching your specifications.
