How to Determine if an Available Position is Right For You

Which job is the right one for you? Choosing a position that matches your unique needs will help you achieve your career goals. The most important thing you can do is have a clear understanding of those goals. Then you must ask yourself a few important questions to help you evaluate your job prospects.

Determining Your Goals.
Base your career goals on the following three categories:

  • Financial Goals. No matter where you are in your career, you probably have a picture of your financial needs. These include material possessions, like a home and car, but also intangible items, like healthcare for yourself and your children, travel plans or the age you’d like to retire. What pay level do you need to help you achieve your financial goals?
  • Mental Goals. A career that stimulates your creativity and gives you a sense of accomplishment will differ depending on your motivation. What’s your definition of a dream job? What types of daily tasks do you find interesting and rewarding?  Identifying what you need for mental growth and job satisfaction will help you choose the job that provides what you seek.
  • Social Goals. You want to work within a corporate culture that aligns with your work style. Do you prefer a fast-paced environment, or one that’s more laid back? Do you work better independently or as part of a team? Also, what type of work-life balance do you seek? Determine what you’ll need from an employer to allow for a harmonious union with your job.

Evaluating a Potential Job.
Once you have a good idea of what your goals are for career success, you can more fully evaluate a potential position. Read job posts carefully and be thorough during interviews. Consider the following questions when making the final decision about a new job:

  1. What is the culture of the organization?
You can find this information on the company’s website by reviewing their mission statement and vision. Also, ask your interviewer what a typical day is like at the office.
  2. What does the job pay?
Will this amount put you one step closer to your goals?
  3. Is this a new position or are you replacing a previous employee?
Find out if you’ll be filling previous shoes or if you’ll have the opportunity to expand and develop the role, if it’s new.
  4. Does the job help you exercise your strengths?
What are the job requirements? What will your duties be? Determine if you’ll be tasked with responsibilities that will motivate you and help you grow in your career.
  5. How do they spell success?
Ask your interviewer what you’ll need to achieve in the role to be successful. Look for a reasonable answer from your recruiter, and one you feel you can achieve.
