Putting Together a Company Culture that Screams Productivity

What do you picture when you envision a productive workplace? You might call to mind a bustling-yet-organized environment full of positive energy, team work, idea sharing and camaraderie. Productive teams constantly churn out top-notch work that allows for the highest quality end product—be it a concept, product or service. A company culture like this can be yours, but it takes a little work—and a little trust—to get it right.

Easy, creative ways to foster employee productivity

Follow these tips to build a productive company culture:

  • Reduce Web distractions. The internet is a temptation that many of us access compulsively, often without thinking about it. To help employees focus on the task at hand, it can help to limit internet access to only work-related sites. Social media sites can be extremely distracting, as can sports sites, celebrity gossip sites and various shopping pages. You may also want to create a policy for smart phone usage in the office, as it may be second nature for employees to reach for their phones.
  • Include natural elements in the workplace. Office additions, such as plants, or access to natural light and fresh, outside air can help employees to relax, breathe easier and summon their creative juices. The mind responds well to natural elements; they can serve as a source of calmness and inspiration to your employees.
  • Take a step back. Though you may think it’s helpful to monitor your employees’ minute-to-minute progress, micromanagement can have a negative effect on productivity. Allow your staff some freedom to work on and complete tasks. Start small. As you build trust, work your way up to allowing your employees the autonomy to get things done in their own way.
  • Keep it neat! A well-organized workplace helps the mind remain uncluttered, as well. Position equipment, supplies and machinery in logical locations for employees to accomplish tasks as unimpeded as possible.
  • Allow for personal flair. Let your staff add touches of home to their work stations. Remember that employees spend a large portion of their day on the job, and it’s important for them to feel comfortable within their surroundings.
  • Don’t discount the value of a nap. Many companies are embracing short nap breaks as a way to rejuvenate employees and beat an afternoon slump. Full-time workers have ample time for a quick rest during their lunch break. Some offices provide quiet relaxation areas for this purpose.
  • Promote internally. As an employee, nothing is more motivating than the possibility of seeing your hard work pay off. The benefit of promoting your own employees is they are already familiar with the company and its culture, something a worker from the outside would need time to learn.
  • Pay attention to design. The look and feel of your office space can also be motivating (or uninspiring) to your staff. Think about the wall color, window treatments, art work, carpeting, equipment design, break room layout or lobby appearance. What enhancements can you make to positively change the surroundings?

A productive work place is within your grasp! By taking a look around and thinking about beneficial changes, you can help to inspire and motivate your employees.
