Four Tips to Change Your Mood and Ensure Workplace Satisfaction

Sometimes, your job satisfaction can be as simple as your mood. A positive attitude can help you keep a spring in your step and a smile on your face. And employers prefer positive workers because they help to maintain great team synergy and a harmonious work environment. The good news is, you can take four easy steps to be more cheerful on the job. Here’s how.

Four ways to improve your outlook at work

Some may say that if you’re not happy at work, it’s time to change jobs. But what if that isn’t a good option for you right now? To be happier with your current job, here’s what you can do:

Don’t hang around with the complainers.

Your mood may be more influenced by those around you than you realize. As often as possible, steer clear of colleagues that are always in foul moods. Try to gravitate towards a more light-hearted, positive crowd and your own mood may soon follow suit.

Shift your job responsibilities.

What part of your job do you like the best? Set some time aside to talk with your boss about building more of that into your job description. You may be able to trade a few responsibilities with a co-worker and take on more of what you like.

Learn something new.

Have you ever noticed that discovering something you never knew existed can be an enlightening experience? This is because our minds are built to think, and when they stagnate they get bored and restless. It could be that your unhappiness at work is just due to boredom. Ask your boss if you can try a new task or responsibility that looks interesting, or attend a training, class or seminar. You might also try to pick up a new hobby outside of work, just to get your mental wheels spinning. Join a sports league or a book club, pick up a new musical instrument or language, or travel somewhere you’ve never been before.

Adjust your self-talk.

Rather than asking yourself questions like, “Why do I work here?” ask something like, “How can I make today different than usual?” or “Where can my skills help the company more?” Think outside the box a little. When you start you day with a can-do attitude, you may notice that your whole outlook—and possibly even your job role—begins to change for the better.

Give it your very best effort

Take it a day at a time. At the end of each day, reflect on how your efforts impacted your day for the better. After a few weeks or so, if you aren’t feeling your mood shift, reassess your situation. It may be a better use of your energy to attempt to find a new job that will be a better match for your hopes and ambitions.
