How Recruiters Read Your Resume

A recruiter is a valuable partner in your job search. He or she will act as your job coach, helping you to polish your job-seeking skills. After a quick scan of your resume, your recruiter will gain a better idea of who you are and what you’re all about. But you can make some important edits to help your recruiter help you. Here’s what you can do.

How Recruiters Read Your Resume

You can maximize your time and success with a staffing agency by structuring your resume specifically for them. Many recruiters look for the following first:

Headline.

Your resume should include a title that sums up your personal brand in one sentence. This is not an objective statement, which is outdated. It is a one-sentence summary of who you are and what you do.

Current and most recent job.

A recruiter will want to know where you work right now and what you do. He or she will also want to know the most recent place you’ve previously worked, and your role at that company, as well.

Total experience.

Can you sum up your job experience in a paragraph? What have you contributed and accomplished at your jobs? This will give your recruiter an idea of how you can help a future employer.

Unexplained employment gaps.

If you took time off to raise your children, spent time unemployed but looking, or have gaps in your job history for other reasons, be sure to briefly explain these on your resume. Recruiters will question them.

Keywords.

If the recruiter uses a software program to scan resumes, keywords will come in handy. Keywords are also useful as the recruiter does a quick scan of your resume. To find the bet keywords for your industry, just spend a little time on a job sites, such as monster.com or indeed.com.

Personality.

One great way to help yourself stand out is by infusing a little personality into your resume. You can do this with your writing style and word choice. It can also help to list out certain “soft skills” that set you apart, such as timeliness, strict attention to detail, compassion for others, etc.
