How to Rekindle the Passion You Once Felt for Your Career

Dear job: it’s not you, it’s me.

Once upon a time, you loved your job. You woke up without hitting snooze six times, got ready and got out the door. You sang to the radio on the way in. You greeted coworkers as you found your way to your desk. And then, with a flourish, you began your day. But lately… it’s just not the same.

You just don’t feel that sparkle anymore. You’re bored. You’re tired. Even worse: you’re angry or frustrated.

Dear job: maybe it IS you.

If you’re just not in love with your job anymore, what can you do to rekindle the passion you once felt?

Five Ways to Get Your Job Mojo Back

With just a few changes, you’ll be back to a working life that works for you. Here’s how:

Find Your People

It’s inevitable—there are people you like to work with and those you don’t. Talk to your manager and make arrangements to do more projects with the people you work well with. For those who don’t inspire or motivate you, or whom you just don’t get along with—talk to your manager to determine how to distance yourself.

Learn Something New

Nothing refreshes your mind and soul quite like fresh knowledge. What about your career could you be better at? What training or education could help you branch out and grow? It may be as simple as reading articles on the internet, or you may want to go as far as enrolling in a class or two. Talk to your manager to see if education costs are covered by your company.

Establish Work/Life Balance

Overwork is draining. If you feel you spend too much time within four cubicle walls and not enough time with those you love, something needs to change. Maybe you need to shuffle your duties around, or maybe your department needs to hire extra help. It’s possible your manager isn’t aware of the extra strain on your position—and it never hurts to consult your higher-ups and explain your situation.

Take Care of Yourself

Feeling bad on the inside can make life dreary on the outside. It’s important to your immune system, memory and energy level to get enough sleep, eat healthy foods and stay hydrated. If you’re under stress at home, talking to a counselor can help you handle emotional difficulties. Being the best and healthiest version of you can help improve your outlook at work, as well as your life in general.

Change Departments

Maybe you have reached the end of the road with your current position, but you still feel your company has more to offer. If that’s the case, why not apply for another role that will allow you to switch departments? Fresh new faces and different responsibilities can make your job exciting again.

What if you decide to change companies?

Or even shift careers? Unhappiness at work often causes people to look within themselves for an answer. This can often be a job somewhere else, doing something completely different. That’s OK, but be sure to weigh the pros and cons of uprooting your life before you make the leap. Always run towards something better, rather than running away from something you feel is bad.
