When you’re feeling stressed at work, simple breathing techniques can help you regain calm and refocus your energy. Shifting attention to your breath is an easy way to naturally reduce stress when you’re having a hard day.

Three breathing techniques to help you calm down

Based on pranayama yoga, which translated means breathwork, you can practice these three techniques to take control of your emotions. Just follow these breathing exercises, as presented by one of the leading providers of entry level jobs in Atlanta:

Mindful Breathing

This breathing technique helps you focus on the simple act of breathing—as the air moves into and out of your lungs. Sit up straight in a comfortable chair and close your eyes. Rest your hands in your lap. Relax your body and breathe naturally. Feel the air flow in through your nose and out through your mouth. Feel your lungs expand as you breathe in, and your abdomen flatten as you push air back out. Just let yourself breathe for a few minutes until you start to feel yourself calm down.

Abdominal Breathing

When we get upset, we start to take fast, short breaths that don’t give us the oxygen we need. With abdominal breathing, start in a comfortable chair, sitting straight with your eyes closed. Place one hand on your chest and one on your stomach. As you breath in, let your abdomen expand outward and upward, followed by your chest and ribs, as you take a full, complete breath. Then push your breath back out. Follow this for five breaths, or until you feel calm.

Calming and Cooling Breathing

This breathing technique helps you harness the cooling sensation of your breath and its ability to calm you down. It can help you calm your mind and improve concentration. Sit straight up in a comfortable chair and close your eyes. Close your right nostril with the thumb of your right hand, and breathe in slowly through your left nostril. When you’ve taken a full breath, release your right nostril, and close your left nostril with your left thumb. Then, breathe out through your right nostril. Follow this for five breaths, or until you feel calm.

Find a Safe Place to Relax and Breathe

Depending on where you work, you may not be able to just stop work and practice breathing techniques at your workspace. Be sure to find a safe, quiet place where you can sit comfortably and calm down.
