Don’t take your time planning to have a conversation with this employee. Schedule a meeting with the person one-on-one to discuss your concerns. Let them know you’re concerned because you want to see them do well.  

Make a Plan

Follow Up 

Meet back up regularly with the employee to review their progress. Make sure they are sticking to the plan and making strides toward their goal of improving job performance. Answer any questions they have to help them stay on track.

If the under-performer is working hard and getting better, reward them for their accomplishments. This could include recognition, a gift card, a thank you note or company merchandise.  

Know When to Say When 

If the employee isn’t making progress, you may need to take steps to adjust or change their role within the company.
