Don’t Let Your Coworkers Get You Sick—How to Stay Healthy at Work

As cold and flu season winds down, but COVID-19 still presents a current health challenge—one of the top things on everyone’s mind is how to stay safe and healthy. Though some of our country is working from home, employees such as warehouse and health care employees are still heading into work. To help contain the spread of COVID-19 and keep yourself and your family safe, it helps to take some important precautions during your workday.

Five Ways to Keep Yourself Healthy and Safe

The situation is changing quickly, as are health recommendations. It’s always a good idea to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) online to check for the most current advice for staying healthy. Beyond that, you may want to follow these guidelines at work:

Wash Your Hands

During any cold and flu season and especially now, the number one way to stay healthy is to wash your hands. Use warm soapy water and suds for at least 20 seconds. If you don’t have access to soap and a sink, use hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.

Maintain Social Distancing

COVID-19 can be spread between people in close contact with one another. When you are outside your home (like at work), the CDC recommends a minimum of six feet between people.

Use Protective Items

A cloth facecover or gloves can help you from spreading germs to other people. It is not meant as a substitute for social distancing. You may wish to bring these items with you to work if your employer does not already supply them. Always dispose of gloves in the trash can when you’re done using them.

Keep Surfaces Sanitized

Frequently touched items, such as doorknobs, keyboards and phones, should be wiped down regularly—at least once a day. Check with your employer about available sanitizing products and the process to follow in your workplace.

Stay Home if You’re Not Feeling Well

If you feel sick, stay home to give yourself a chance to rest, and limit the spread of germs to others. Contact your doctor and stay in touch with how you’re feeling.

Follow these Steps to Stay Safe

During this challenging time, it’s important to follow health precautions to stay safe. Always check with your employer or recruiter if you have any questions about the procedures to follow in your workplace.
