Try these four techniques to keep your spirits up, even when others are trying to drag you down: 

Be Grateful 

Every day, begin by thinking about all the good things in your life. These can be as big or as small as you wish. Maybe you’re thankful for your family, your home or your education. Maybe, your gratitude list is as simple as the gas station attendant who gives you a genuine smile each time you stop in, or the smell of your favorite bakery when you pick up your breakfast sandwich. Whatever makes you happy, focus on those things for a few minutes each morning. 

Avoid Negative People

If possible, try to limit the time you spend around negative people. If there’s someone you know is a Debbie Downer, don’t try to engage her in conversation if you can help it. Simply smile and say good morning, and then move along on your way.  

Have Empathy

It could be that a person you work with is negative because something is upsetting him or her that has nothing to do with work. Give that person the benefit of the doubt and understand that you have no idea what could be going on behind the scenes. Tell yourself that he or she might be much more jovial given different circumstances.  

Ignore It

That gratitude list you think about each morning? That’s a good thing to call to mind when someone around you is being overly negative. It’s also a good time to daydream, excuse yourself to make a phone call, or even take a break. Just because someone else is in a bad mood, it doesn’t need to bring you down, as well.
