Why all successful professionals write down their goals and revisit them regularly

If you set goals for the New Year, you probably know it takes more than just setting them. Lots of people have the best of intentions, but when it comes to actually DOING something about their goals, they tend to forget them right about the time January is in the rearview. That’s why it helps to tack on just a few more steps after you set a goal for yourself. It’s much easier than you may think, and when you’re well on your way to achieving your goal, you’ll thank yourself.

Write them down

Yes, it’s really that easy. The first step after setting a goal is simply writing it down. When you see your goal in writing, it makes it more real and helps you commit. Some people even create “vision boards” to help them visualize the goal. A vision board is your goal in words, plus pictures of it. For example, if you want to go on a beach vacation this summer, but need to save up some money, your vision board would say “beach vacation” with lots of tempting pictures of sandy beaches and palm trees, maybe a frosty beverage.

Break them into tiny steps

And the good news is: no step is too tiny! Any step that helps you move forward is a good one. How will you reach your goal? What steps will it take? You don’t have to know everything right off the bat, because you will likely learn along the way. So just set a few small steps to get started.

Revisit your goals regularly

Maybe at the end of every week, or even the end of every day. Maybe you check in each month to see how you’re progressing. This helps in two ways: first, you can see the progress you’ve made, which is incredibly motivating. Two, you can see the progress you HAVEN’T made, but you’ll know the steps you took that didn’t work. This way, you can plan new steps, recalibrate and keep going.

Don’t give up

This is maybe the most important step. Don’t give up! Your dedication is the ingredient that will help you reach your goal.

Ask for advice

Maybe you’re stuck and not sure how to proceed. There is someone out there who can help you figure out the next step… it could be a friend, coworker, professional contact, someone you found on LinkedIn… the list goes on and on. If you need answers, look around and ask plenty of questions!
