What should you do if you feel unmotivated and uninspired?

We all wish we could start every day with tons of energy and motivation. If this wasn’t true, coffee shops wouldn’t be so popular! They give us the zing we need to get going, whether that’s thinking creatively, problem solving or just starting the day. What techniques do you use that are like caffeine for your brain?

Finding inspiration when you don’t feel motivated

Not sure how to get started some days? It just takes practice to bring yourself out of a funk and into the sunny light of inspiration. Try these four techniques:

  1. Just start writing. Grab a piece of paper, or open a Word doc. Then, just start writing whatever comes into your head. It could be a to-do list, your daily intention, what you’re thankful for, worries that are running through your head or simply a description of the room around you. Don’t limit yourself and don’t stop. Simply keep writing anything and everything for five whole minutes. Once you start the wheels turning, your mind will take over and start filling up with plenty of new and refreshed thoughts.
  2. Do something interesting. Jumping right into emails or a project first thing can feel a little intimidating, especially if you’re unmotivated. So start the day doing something you find endlessly interesting. Listen to a few songs you love or watch a short video on YouTube. Is there something you would love to learn? Do a little reading about it. Research your next vacation or something you’d like to purchase one day. The positive thoughts that fill your mind when you’re doing something that doesn’t feel like work can be incredibly calming and motivating.
  3. Step away. Maybe you don’t run into issues first thing in the morning, but instead hit an afternoon slump. Just like every other part of your body, your brain needs a rest, too. This is why it’s good to take regular breaks to allow your mind to rest and reset itself. You might choose to go for a walk or hit the gym, have a healthy snack, meditate, listen to some music or head to a local cafe for a bit. Just something to help you clear your head!
  4. Talk to a good friend. A friend who cheers us up, makes us laugh, lends an ear when we need it and gives helpful advice is a precious gift. Never be afraid to contact them when you’re in a slump. You may find that just chatting and sharing can give you the motivation you need to get back on track.

Is it your job?

Maybe you’re just not feeling the magic at your job anymore. It can be extremely hard to get motivated if you’re just not happy.
