How might you change up your morning routine to maximize your happiness throughout the day?

Some of us are just not morning people! Still, the way you spend the moments right after you wake up can have a huge impact on the rest of your day. There’s no secret recipe for everyone, but by trying a few techniques, you’ll be able to find what works for you.

Morning Routines that Build Happiness

It’s all about adding positivity and healthy habits that will stick with you for the rest of the day. Some morning routines you might try include:

  • Exercising. If you already have a hard time getting up in the morning, this one may feel like a great, big NOPE. But morning activity doesn’t need to include running a 5k. Simply walking the dog around the block, or moving for just 10 minutes can get your heart pumping and blood flowing. Plus, if you knock out your daily exercise first thing, you’ll already feel like you accomplished something for the day.
  • Eating breakfast. Again, this doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Just toast and fruit can do it. But getting food into your system in the morning helps your body and mind function with the energy they need to move, plus it encourages you to make healthier food choices during the day. When you skip breakfast, by the time you eat, you may be ravenous—and reach for anything you can find, which is often food that’s not good for you.
  • Practicing gratitude. You can start the day out on a good note by thinking about all the things you’re grateful for. Keep a gratitude journal and each morning, write down 3-5 good things in your life. You’ll be amazed by all the ways you’re blessed!
  • Reading. Skip the news, as this can bring you down. Instead, choose a chapter in a good book or an article related to a hobby or something that interests you. Reading will help get your mind moving first thing in the morning.
  • Avoiding your email. Getting right into your messages first thing can be overwhelming and start your day with stress and anxiety. Instead, jot down your to-do list first, before you dive into your email for the day.
  • Having a coffee. A little caffeine can help you get motivated, but the key is a little. Too much can leave you jittery, making concentration difficult and starting your day on a stressful note.
  • Listening to your favorite music. Make a Spotify playlist of songs that pump you up, and listen on your way into work, or as you make breakfast (if you work from home).
  • Setting an intention for the day. What is one thing you’d like to accomplish for the day? Your intention could be: “Today, I won’t jump to conclusions,” or “Today I will give everyone I meet the benefit of the doubt.” Your intention should be positive and a little reminder of how to have a great day.

What Works for You?

Everyone is different and your morning routine should be what works for you! Once you establish your routine, stay consistent with what works, and make adjustments if you need to keep things fresh.
