Three Skills that Every Employee (Regardless of Job Title) Should Have

Qualified job candidates win the race! But beyond specialized skills, it’s good to cover the basics: what job skills are so important, so critical, that every employee should have them? Once you know this, you can work on building these skills so you’re an expert—thus putting you ahead of the curve when you look for your next job. So… what are they?

Three Key Job Skills You Need to Master

To be a top-notch worker in any field, you would be wise to develop all of the following:

Communication

From the factory floor to the surgery table to the dock of a ship and seated behind a computer—anyone in the working world needs to be able to communicate well and effectively. It doesn’t matter if you’re speaking with your boss, employees, patients, customers or coworkers. You’ve heard the expression, “There’s no I in TEAM.” Well, this is 100 percent true. To be good at what you do, you’ll need to be able to express yourself and share information in both written and verbal communications. You should brush up on your phone and meeting skills, avoid industry jargon (but also understand it), and master good grammar and spelling, email usage, etc.

Organization

Does your workspace look like a center of highly productive work, or more like an unmade bed? Some may feel they work better with their “own system of organizing,” but it’s important to keep everything as uncluttered as possible. Good organization at your desk or work station—and within your paper and electronic files—is absolutely necessary. It’s also important to be able to organize your workday with a to-do list, and organize your free time around your outside obligations (so they don’t spill into your workday). Being well-organized is very important to being productive and efficient at your job.

Lifelong Learning

Though the human mind isn’t technically a muscle, it needs to be exercised like one. You can do this by always learning new things. Lifelong learning will help keep your mind sharp and nimble, and will prevent you from stagnating—at work or anywhere else. You can participate in continuing education or training that helps you learn more on-the-job knowledge. Or you can choose to pick up hobbies and learn about other things that interest you. Whatever you decide, keeping your mind active is an admirable undertaking—just ask any employer.
